{"id":32431,"date":"2026-10-08T10:13:34","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T02:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=oasis-news&#038;p=32431"},"modified":"2026-10-08T10:13:46","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T02:13:46","slug":"curtin-phd-student-wins-at-international-conference-in-belgium","status":"publish","type":"oasis-news","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/oasis-news\/curtin-phd-student-wins-at-international-conference-in-belgium\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin PhD student wins at international conference in Belgium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reading time: 2 minutes<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Curtin PhD student has taken home the <strong>Best Poster Award<\/strong> at an international conference bringing together hundreds of researchers and practitioners from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ian Lim, a PhD student in Molecular and Life Sciences<\/strong>, received the award at the <strong>14th International Conference on Biological Invasions<\/strong>, held in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His poster, <em>Tracking the killer&#8217;s kin: Estimating natal dispersal of feral cats in southwestern Australia<\/em>, showcased findings from his PhD research into feral cats in Western Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research is a collaboration between Curtin\u2019s <strong>Population Biology &amp; Genomics Group (PBG)<\/strong> in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences, <strong>5 Rivers NRM<\/strong> and the <strong>Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the project, Ian analyses tissue samples collected through feral cat control efforts under the <strong>Farmers for Fauna<\/strong> project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking Curtin research to the world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The week-long conference brought together <strong>371 attendees from 45 nationalities<\/strong>, including students, researchers and practitioners working across areas such as invasive plants and reptiles, biodiversity data infrastructure and invasive species management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ian\u2019s wider research interests include invasion genomics, modelling how species disperse and spread, measuring control effort, ecosystem-based management, public attitudes towards lethal control, and reproducible and open-data approaches to invasion science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is supervised by <strong>Professor Ben Phillips<\/strong> and <strong>Dr Brenton von Takach<\/strong> from Curtin\u2019s Population Biology &amp;
