As part of Respect Starts With You, Curtin is committed to creating a community where everyone understands their role in recognising harm, speaking up and accessing support when they need it.

Understanding how reporting works can help you make an informed decision about what feels right for you.

What does reporting mean?

Reporting is a way of informing the University about a concern, incident or behaviour that may impact the safety, wellbeing or respectful treatment of members of the Curtin community.

A report helps the University understand what has occurred and consider what actions or support may be appropriate.

Reporting can relate to your own experience, concerns about another person, or something you have witnessed.

If you are unsure about your options, Respect Starts With You provides information about support services, reporting pathways and ways we can all contribute to a safer and more respectful Curtin community.

Common myths about reporting

There are many misconceptions about what happens when someone submits a report.

Myth: Reporting means I have to make a formal complaint.

Fact: Reporting and making a formal complaint are not the same thing. A report can help you access support, explore options and understand what steps are available.

Myth: Once I make a report, I lose control of the process.

Fact: The Safer Community Team will discuss options with you and explain what happens next. Wherever possible, you will be involved in decisions about your next steps.

Myth: I need proof before I can report something.

Fact: You do not need to have all the answers or evidence before reaching out for support and advice.

Myth: Reporting is only for people directly involved.

Fact: You can also make a report if you have witnessed concerning behaviour or are worried about the safety or wellbeing of someone else.

What happens after a report is submitted?

After a report is received, the Safer Community Team will review the information and contact you if appropriate.

They may:

Discuss your concerns with you

Explain available support services

Help you understand reporting and complaint pathways

Discuss safety planning if needed

Connect you with internal or external support services

The purpose of this initial contact is to help you understand your options and determine what support may be helpful.

You remain in control of the information you share and the decisions you make about next steps.

What’s the difference between a report and a formal complaint?

A report lets the University know about a concern and can help connect you with support, information and guidance.

A formal complaint is a separate process that may involve a more detailed investigation or consideration of specific actions.

Not every report becomes a formal complaint.

If you are considering either option, the Safer Community Team can explain the differences and help you understand what each pathway involves.

Support is available throughout the process

Whether you’re thinking about making a report, have already submitted one, or are supporting someone else, you don’t have to navigate the process alone.

The Safer Community Team can provide advice and information, while Student Wellbeing Advisory Services can support your emotional wellbeing throughout the process.

Support is available before, during and after any reporting process.

Seeking support and reporting concerns helps contribute to a safer and more respectful Curtin community.

Report

If you want the University to consider action, support is available through the reporting process.

Learn more about support options, reporting pathways and creating a respectful community through Respect Starts With You.

Reporting to Safer Community

If you have witnessed something on campus and are not sure what to do about it, or don’t feel comfortable stepping in at the time, you can always report the incident to Safer Community.

You can report an incident or concern to The Safer Community Team:

Report it online

Report the incident via the SafeZone app

Call the Safer Community Team on (08) 9266 4444

Dial 000 in an emergency

You can also learn about what happens next after submitting a report.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected – on and off campus.
