With training underway and a cultural launch event approaching, the team is ready to showcase their skills and celebrate culture through sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Newcastle hosts the 30th anniversary of the Indigenous Nationals, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the event takes place &#8211; the Awabakal and Worimi Peoples &#8211; and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the Kardas will be led by captains Rhiannon Dunn and Santchiago Loberio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to be a part of the Indigenous Nationals community, I am honoured to be the female captain and hope to make a positive contribution\u201d Rhiannon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santchiago added &#8220;I\u2019m hoping I can help make this an amazing experience for all members of the team, as I\u2019ve had amazing experiences myself over the last three Indigenous Nationals&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let\u2019s go Kardas \ud83d\udc9b\ud83d\udda4\u2764\ufe0f | Indigenous Nationals | Centre for Aboriginal Studies x Curtin Sport\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mi8sum8wpJc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Held annually, the week-long event brings together Indigenous student-athletes from universities across Australia to compete in a variety of sports. But it\u2019s not just about competition \u2013 it\u2019s about community, connection, and celebrating culture through sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s Indigenous Nationals will run from 29 June to 3 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyrell Vidot, a returning athlete, said \u201cI love the atmosphere of the Indigenous Nationals, I am looking forwarding to coming back and representing my mob again, meet other Indigenous people from all over and playing sport with so many new teammates.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1000x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1000x500.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-740x370.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-480x240.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1260x630.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1520x760.jpg 1520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Kardas, the nationals are a chance to showcase their skills, represent Curtin with pride and stand strong in culture and community. The 15-strong team will compete in basketball, netball, touch rugby and volleyball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indigenous Nationals, formerly known as the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games (NITESG), has a proud history dating back to 1996. What started as a class project has since grown into one of the country\u2019s most celebrated sporting events for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With training well and truly underway, friendly matches taking place across Curtin, and an upcoming smoking ceremony marking the cultural launch event, the Kardas are ready to perform at their best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wishing our Kardas the very best of luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go Kardas! \ud83d\udc9b\ud83d\udda4\u2764\ufe0f<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin\u2019s Kardas team is counting down to this year\u2019s Indigenous Nationals, running from 29 June to 3 July at the University of Newcastle.
