{"id":30926,"date":"2026-04-22T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=oasis-news&#038;p=30926"},"modified":"2026-04-15T11:00:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T03:00:19","slug":"film-screening-at-john-curtin-gallery-before-1770","status":"publish","type":"oasis-news","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/oasis-news\/film-screening-at-john-curtin-gallery-before-1770\/","title":{"rendered":"Film screening at John Curtin Gallery: Before 1770"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Reading time: 1 minute<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin students are invited to a free screening of the film<strong> <em>Before 1770<\/em><\/strong> at John Curtin Gallery, held to mark the closing of the Perth Festival exhibition <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/exhibitions\/perthfestival2026\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/exhibitions\/perthfestival2026\/\">A call and response across the ocean<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film builds on ideas explored in the exhibition, examining themes of transglobal colonisation and cultural memory while offering a perspective on Australia\u2019s history that is often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For centuries before European settlement, the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land and Makassan Muslims from Sulawesi formed deep connections through trade, shared language and family ties. <em>Before 1770<\/em> brings these relationships to life through vivid storytelling and immersive re\u2011enactments, highlighting journeys, rituals and friendships that stretch across oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By challenging colonial myths, the film celebrates a long\u2011standing history of collaboration and cultural exchange. It invites audiences to reflect on identity, belonging and Australia\u2019s rich pre\u2011colonial past, and to consider histories that sit beyond dominant narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The screening takes place on <strong>Sunday 3 May 2026 from 1:30pm to 4pm<\/strong>.
