If you’re an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student at Curtin, there are dedicated supports to help you succeed in your studies, look after your wellbeing and feel part of a strong community. Here’s a clear guide to what’s available and how you can make the most of it.

Centre for Aboriginal Studies (CAS)

The Centre for Aboriginal Studies is your first stop for support. CAS is a space built for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, where you can find advice, academic help and cultural connection. Whether you need tutoring, help adjusting to uni life or just a place to study alongside other Indigenous students, CAS has you covered. The staff are there to guide you through your degree, answer questions and link you to other Curtin services when needed.

Academic support

University work can sometimes feel like a big leap, especially if you’re moving from high school or a different pathway. CAS offers academic mentoring, workshops and tutoring to help you build confidence in your studies. You can get help with assignments, referencing, exam prep and developing study skills. There are also Indigenous enabling courses designed to prepare you for uni and set you up with the skills you’ll use throughout your degree.

Scholarships and financial help

Managing money at uni can be stressful. Curtin offers a range of scholarships specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These can support you financially so you can focus more on your studies and less on work hours. The CAS team can help you find scholarships that suit your situation and assist with the application process.

Health and wellbeing

Your wellbeing matters just as much as your grades. As a Curtin student, you have access to counselling, medical services and wellbeing programs. There are staff who understand the unique challenges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students may face, and you can talk with them in a safe, respectful environment. Whether it’s stress, homesickness, or something more personal, you don’t have to go through it alone.

Community and belonging

One of the best things about CAS is the sense of community. You’ll meet other students with similar experiences, and you can take part in events, workshops and cultural activities that keep you connected. This is also a place to celebrate identity and build networks that go beyond university.

How to get started

If you’re looking for support, head to the Centre for Aboriginal Studies on campus or visit the CAS website. You can also explore Curtin’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student support page.
