They’ll come from the friendships you build, the communities you join and the experiences that shape who you are outside the classroom. Sure, your degree is important, it’s why you’re here, but uni is also about discovering what makes you feel connected, inspired and well.

That’s where Curtin’s range of extracurricular experiences come in. From clubs and volunteering, to sport and leadership, there are endless ways to get involved. These aren’t just “extras” on top of your study, they’re opportunities to recharge, meet new people and create memories that stick with you long after graduation.

Why should you invest time in extracurriculars?

When you’re under pressure, the last thing you might want to do is add something else to your calendar. But being involved in activities outside the classroom helps you manage stress and feel like you belong. Uni can sometimes feel overwhelming or even isolating, and connecting with others is one of the best ways to protect your mental health.

Clubs and communities

The Curtin Student Guild is home to heaps of clubs covering just about everything – cultural groups, sports, arts, gaming, professional networks, you name it. Joining a club means you’ve instantly got people around you who share your interests. You could be bonding over board games one week, then running events or trips the next. For many students, clubs become their anchor point on campus—the place they go to relax and recharge.

Volunteering and leadership

If giving back appeals to you, Curtin Volunteers! is a great place to start. You’ll get the chance to work on community projects, meet new people, and make a real difference. There are also leadership programs where you can mentor other students, organise events, or represent Curtin. These experiences don’t just look great on a CV, they build confidence, resilience and a sense of purpose.

Sport and recreation

Not everyone loves the gym, and that’s okay. Curtin offers plenty of options to stay active, from sport competitions, to casual social sports and fitness classes. Moving your body is one of the simplest and most effective ways to look after your mental health. Even if you’re not a “sporty” person, trying something new can be surprisingly fun and energising.

Find your fit

There’s no one “right way” to get involved. Maybe you’ll dive deep into a single club, or maybe you’ll experiment with a mix of sport, volunteering and creative outlets. What matters is that you give yourself permission to try. Uni is the perfect time to explore and discover what makes you feel happy, connected, and well.

Take the first step

Head to our website to see what’s available and how you can join in.
