Day 2025: A reminder to check in with each other

Reading time: 2 minutes

Thursday 11 September 2025 is R U OK? Day – a national day of action that encourages all of us to pause, reach out and start meaningful conversations about mental health and wellbeing.

This year’s message is simple but powerful: Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.

University life can be exciting, but it can also be stressful and isolating at times. Assignments, placements, work, and personal challenges all add up. That’s why taking a moment to check in with friends, classmates or even family members can make a big difference.

How to have a supportive conversation

You don’t need to be a counsellor to show someone you care. By being present and open, you can help someone feel heard and supported before things reach crisis point. R U OK? suggests four simple steps:

1. Ask “Are you OK?”

Pick a good time and place where you can talk without distractions.

Be genuine. If you’ve noticed changes, mention them: “I’ve noticed you seem quieter lately. How are you going?”

2. Listen with an open mind

Give them your full attention. Don’t interrupt or rush them.

Encourage them to share more with prompts like, “That sounds tough. How are you feeling about it?”

Reflect back what you’ve heard to check you’ve understood.

3. Encourage action

Gently suggest practical next steps, like talking to a health professional if they’ve been struggling for more than a couple of weeks.

Remind them that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

4. Check in

Follow up after the first chat. A quick message or coffee catch-up shows you care and keeps the conversation going.

Even small actions like these can help someone feel less alone.

Need more support?

If you or someone you know needs extra help, there are services available:

Student Wellbeing Advisory Service — 1800 244 043 or studentwellbeing@curtin.edu.au

Psychological and Counselling Services — (08) 9266 7850

Lifeline (24/7) — 13 11 14

Beyond Blue (24/7) — 1300 22 4636

Anglicare WA — 1300 11 44 46 (Mon – Fri, 8.30am – 4.30pm)

This R U OK? Day, remember that checking in isn’t just for one day in September. Every conversation is a chance to show care, strengthen connections and help someone take a step toward support.

Some tips for connecting with others

1.
