Students are encouraged to question ideas, debate openly and criticise policies, including those of governments. For students from authoritarian countries, this environment may feel unfamiliar or even risky.<br><br>Authoritarian governments often suppress political dissent and may try to monitor or intimidate their citizens, even while they are studying overseas. In Australia, this is considered <strong>foreign interference<\/strong>, and it is illegal.<br><br>If you are feeling pressured, harassed or unsure, you are not alone. Support is available.<br><br><strong>Your rights and responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have the right to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Express your opinions and participate in debate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Join clubs and peacefully protest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criticise government leaders or policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You do not have the right to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Harass, threaten or silence others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote violence or hatred<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When threats, intimidation, harassment, or promotion of violence are secretly directed or encouraged by government officials or proxies, it may constitute as a federal criminal offence under the <em>National Security Amendment (Espionage and Foreign Interference) Act 2018.<\/em><br><br><strong>How can Curtin help?<\/strong><br><br>Curtin is here to support a safe and open environment for everyone.
