O-Week in Kalgoorlie was more than just a welcome, it was an experience packed with history, hands-on learning and a taste of life in the mining industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week kicked off with a deep dive (literally) into Kalgoorlie\u2019s gold mining past at the Museum of the Goldfields. Students explored the iconic Gold Vault and climbed the Head Frame for a sweeping view of the town and the Northern Star Resources mine sites. It wasn\u2019t just about the views, though. Learning how Kalgoorlie and Boulder boomed during the gold rush helped bring the local history to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came a visit to the massive Super Pit. Standing at the edge of one of the biggest open-cut gold mines in the country, students got a crash course in how the operation runs, what’s coming next with its expansion and why it plays such a big role in the region\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another highlight? Wandering through the Hannans North Tourist Mine. It gave students a throwback to how mining was done in the early days, and a real appreciation for how far things have come. At the Hall of Fame, Northern Star professionals shared insights into blasting techniques and future developments, offering students a closer look at the technical side of mining careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back on campus, the first Guild BBQ was a hit. Students mingled with staff, met their mentors and toured the Kalgoorlie campus to get their bearings before classes kicked off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounding out the week was the Professional Skills Development Day. Students sharpened up their resumes and cover letters, polished LinkedIn profiles, and got a reality check on what to expect in a professional work setting; all solid steps toward landing that first job in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
