Now, she shares how stepping back into the solo spotlight helped her rediscover her confidence, and why you may be more capable than you allow yourself to believe.

When Iman first saw the Talent for Tomorrow poster on campus, she almost walked past it. But something made her stop, take a photo and think: Why not give it a shot?

Now studying a graduate certificate in IT after completing her undergraduate degree, Iman wasn’t new to performing, but she hadn’t done it solo in years. Back in high school in Malaysia, she was in the school band and took part in talent shows, and during her bachelor degree she’d performed at UWA’s Spring Feast with friends. But standing alone on stage again was a different challenge.

Iman’s decision to enter came down to the very last day.

“I wasn’t sure at first. I kept putting it off. Then I realised it was the final day to submit, so I quickly recorded a cover and sent it off.”

What started as a last-minute decision ended with Iman being named People’s Choice Award winner after her performance in the showcase. It was an outcome she didn’t expect.

“I thought maybe the band would win, or the group that got the judges’ award. I didn’t think it would be me. They were announcing the winners in reverse, third, then second, and when it got to first, I was like, wait… I actually won?”

Her set included two songs: one was an original she’d written herself about a real-life heartbreak, and the other was a mashup of Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter hits, popular choices that were all relatable. Iman believes that the story behind her original song helped people connect with her, and once she got through the first part, her confidence shone through.

Iman had support in the audience from her boyfriend, her sister, her dad and a few friends who surprised her by showing up, even though they said they couldn’t make it.

“That meant a lot. Performing is nerve-wracking enough, but knowing they were there helped.”

Since winning, Iman hasn’t had much time to perform again, though she still shares her singing on Instagram and hopes to return to writing music when life slows down.

“I did get an email from the Town of Victoria Park asking if I could perform, but I was going overseas at the time,” she says. Despite not being able to attend, the invite alone gave her a confidence boost. She didn’t think her performance was one of her best, yet people still voted for her, and that fact really meant a lot to her.

Her advice for other students thinking of auditioning?

“Don’t doubt yourself. You might surprise yourself with how well you do.”

Want to see the talent for yourself?
