The 2025 Indigenous Nationals concluded last Friday at the University of Western Australia, bringing together student-athletes from across the country for a vibrant week of sport, culture and connection. Curtin University\u2019s Kardas once again did the community proud – competing with heart, spirit and sportsmanship until the very end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volleyball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kardas’ first match against the University of Sydney (UoS) was a nail-biter. After narrowly losing the first set, the team rallied behind a spectacular dive from captain Rishaye, ultimately falling short in the second set 11 – 15. A reflective team meeting followed as the Kardas prepared to bounce back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their second game, the Kardas defeated the University of Wollongong (UoW) 2 – 1. In a true show of camaraderie, the team stayed after the match to run a training session for UoW, sharing tactics to help them take on UoS. With the Kardas cheering them on, UoW pulled off a thrilling upset, breathing new life into Curtin\u2019s hopes for finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their final match against Southern Cross University was another high-stakes battle. The Kardas dominated the first set but lost in the second. With pool rankings on the line, they gave it everything in the third set and emerged victorious. Although they finished tied with UoS on total points, UoS advanced to finals based on set wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Closing Ceremony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    At the Closing Ceremony, Edith Cowan University was awarded the Spirit Trophy, while the University of Newcastle was named overall champion. The Kardas closed the week in joint 13th place out of 32 institutions, finishing as the top-ranked team in Western Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Kardas left the 2025 Indigenous Nationals with pride in their performances and lasting connections with fellow teams. It was a privilege to witness their sportsmanship, resilience and unity throughout the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Next year, the Kardas will head to Newcastle for the 30th Indigenous Nationals, continuing their journey representing Curtin University on the national stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
