{"id":28360,"date":"2026-06-29T11:26:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T03:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=oasis-news&#038;p=28360"},"modified":"2026-07-16T17:51:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T09:51:25","slug":"disability-pride-month-at-curtin","status":"publish","type":"oasis-news","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/oasis-news\/disability-pride-month-at-curtin\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability Pride Month at Curtin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Reading time: 1 minute<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">July is Disability Pride Month!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every July marks an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of the diversity, lived experiences and contributions of people with disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Curtin, we recognise our diverse community of students and staff with disability and their important role within the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disability Pride Month also reflects an important belief that is central to John Curtin\u2019s philosophy: Equal opportunities should be accessible to everyone. When that is the case, every student is better supported to participate, belong and thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To mark Disability Pride Month, the <strong>Disability Pride flag will be up at the Curtin flagpoles on O-Week from Monday 13 July to Friday 17 July 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Disability Pride flag<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1064\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Disability_Pride_Flag_New_Version-1064x500.png\" alt=\"The Disability Pride Flag - The flag has a black background, and five diagonal stripes running from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the flag ( L-R red, yellow, white, light blue, green).\" class=\"wp-image-28361\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Disability Pride Month flag was co-designed by Ann Magill, an American writer and activist with cerebral palsy, and other members of the disability community. The five colours on the flag represent different areas of the disability community:<br><br>\u2022 Green for sensory disabilities<br>\u2022 Blue for psychological disabilities and mental health<br>\u2022 White for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities<br>\u2022 Yellow for cognitive and intellectual disabilities<br>\u2022 Red for physical disabilities<br><br>The colours are displayed in a horizontal line across the flag, which represents cutting through the barriers faced by people with disabilities. You can make zines, or engage with any other creative project, by joining Jordan Alice Fyfe, a disabled artist and Curtin researcher who hosts Chronically Crafty drop-in craft sessions.<\/p>\n<p>These sessions offer a low-sensory space and a low-pressure way to get creative and meet other people.<\/p>\n<p>Materials are provided and no prior experience or skillsets are needed. Facilitated by Gallery Education Coordinator Mel Macauley, this mindful practice creates space and time to connect more deeply with art. Rather than rushing from artwork to artwork, participants are introduced to three selected artworks and encouraged to sit, pause, observe and allow the work to reveal itself, following where it leads their thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p>During the session, we will introduce simple pedagogy for engaging with art through mindful observation and reflection.
