Some people dream about exploring new countries, meeting people from around the world and experiencing life beyond their usual routine. If that sounds like you, chances are you were meant to study abroad.

Here are five signs that a global exchange program could be in your future—plus some tips on how to make it happen.

1. You can’t stay off travel websites

If your search history is filled with cheap flights, travel guides and bucket lists, that’s a major sign. You’re curious about the world, and studying abroad is the perfect way to experience it long-term instead of just as a tourist.

How to make it happen:

Start looking at the global exchange opportunities offered at Curtin. Curtin has partnerships with institutions across the world, making it easier to study abroad than you might think. Subscribe to Go Global alerts to get information about new opportunities, events, competitions and more sent straight to your inbox.

2. You love meeting people from different backgrounds

If you get excited about meeting people from different cultures, trying new foods and learning different perspectives, studying abroad is for you. Living in another country will give you a firsthand experience of different traditions, customs and ways of thinking.

How to make it happen:

Join an international Curtin Student Guild Club! This will help you get comfortable interacting with people from different backgrounds before you even step on a plane. When you do study abroad, you’ll already know how to connect with others and make new friends quickly.

3. You’re always up for an adventure

If the idea of navigating a new city, learning a new language or trying unfamiliar foods excites you rather than stresses you out, that’s another big clue. Studying abroad is full of unexpected experiences, and being open to adventure will help you make the most of it.

How to make it happen:

Pick a study abroad destination that aligns with your personality. Love big cities? Choose a program in a bustling capital. Prefer nature? Look for universities near mountains or beaches. The more your environment matches your interests, the more fulfilling your experience will be. Once you’ve chosen your destination, learn how to apply for an exchange!

4. You’re independent and like figuring things out

Studying abroad comes with challenges, like navigating public transportation, managing your budget in a new currency and adjusting to different academic systems. If you enjoy figuring things out on your own, you’ll thrive in an exchange program.

How to make it happen:

Start preparing by practicing life skills now. Learn how to cook a few basic meals, manage your finances and get comfortable with being independent. Once you’re abroad, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying the experience instead of stressing over everyday tasks

5. You want your resume to stand out

If you’re already thinking about your future career, studying abroad is one of the best ways to gain an edge. Employers love candidates with global experience because it shows adaptability, cultural awareness and independence.

How to make it happen:

Look into scholarship options to make studying abroad more affordable. Curtin is offering up to $10,000 in funding for eligible students who study overseas for a semester as part of their degree in 2025.
