{"id":22107,"date":"2023-07-28T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-28T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=oasis-news&#038;p=22107"},"modified":"2023-07-25T09:36:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T01:36:02","slug":"o-week-at-curtin-kalgoorlie","status":"publish","type":"oasis-news","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/oasis-news\/o-week-at-curtin-kalgoorlie\/","title":{"rendered":"O-Week at Curtin Kalgoorlie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last week, Curtin Kalgoorlie welcomed its new students with an exciting, immersive Orientation program unique to the town&#8217;s heritage and history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a diverse group of students beginning their university journeys this semester, including international students from India, China, Mongolia and Sri Lanka, we were excited to highlight some of Kalgoorlie&#8217;s key cultural experiences as they began their university journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Art Walk with Linda Rae<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1588\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ArtWalk_OASIS.jpg\" alt=\"The new semester 2 2023 cohort in front of a colourful mural.\" class=\"wp-image-22111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ArtWalk_OASIS.jpg 1588w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ArtWalk_OASIS-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ArtWalk_OASIS-1536x812.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1588px) 100vw, 1588px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, a group of 45 students took part in an enriching Art Walk tour to explore the town&#8217;s creative side and gain exposure to the work of local artists. Accompanied with our local resident artist <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lindarae.online\/\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Rae<\/a>, the Art Walk aimed to familiarize the students with the town and its diverse art scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the tour, the students visited vibrant murals created by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brentonsee.com.au\/murals-2022--current.html\" target=\"_blank\">Brenton See<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ourgems.com.au\/artists\/billy-stokes-photographer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Billy Ray Stokes<\/a>, which sparked fruitful conversations and discussions about the power of art in conveying emotions and stories. By the end of the Art Walk, the students had gained not only an understanding of the town&#8217;s layout but also the confidence to explore more of what the town had to offer on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It was great to see the artwork around town&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kalgoorlie Super Pit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1588\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SuperPit_OASIS.jpg\" alt=\"The new semester 2 2023 cohort in front of the Kalgoorlie Super Pit.\" class=\"wp-image-22112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SuperPit_OASIS.jpg 1588w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SuperPit_OASIS-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SuperPit_OASIS-1536x812.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1588px) 100vw, 1588px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, 35 students had a memorable visit to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.superpit.com.au\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.superpit.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kalgoorlie Super Pit<\/a>, one of the largest open-cut mines on Earth and the biggest gold mine in Australia. Students were able to explore the vastness of the Super Pit and witnessed firsthand the scale of mining activities in the town. The students also visited the iconic Mount Charlotte Headframe which stands at 60 meters high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This immersive experience aimed to educate students about mining operations in the town and provided an invaluable opportunity to witness the scale of their future industry firsthand. Beyond learning about mining operations, students also learned about the benefits of living and studying in Kalgoorlie, and becoming a part of a vibrant community throughout their university journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Museum of the Goldfields<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IvanhoeHeadframe_OASIS-1000x1080.jpg\" alt=\"The new semester 2 2023 cohort in front of the Ivanhoe Headframe\" class=\"wp-image-22114\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also had an enlightening visit to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/visit.museum.wa.gov.au\/goldfields\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of the Goldfields<\/a> as part of their Orientation activities on Thursday. Boasting the state&#8217;s largest display of gold bars and nuggets, the Museum also showcases the rich history of the Eastern Goldfields and Kalgoorlie\u2019s mining heritage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the experience, 40 students were able to appreciate the breathtaking views from the top of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ourgems.com.au\/directory\/ivanhoe-headframe-museum-of-the-goldfields\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ivanhoe Headframe<\/a> and also learn about the significance of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/museum.wa.gov.au\/explore\/wa-goldfields\/water-arid-land\/building-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\">Kalgoorlie Pipeline<\/a>, which brings water from Perth to the town. The students took away a deeper understanding about the origins of mining in the area and discovered key landmarks in Kalgoorlie that have shaped its identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I did not know the museum had such a rich history; I want to come back again!&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn more about Curtin Kalgoorlie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin Kalgoorlie offers a range of courses, including business, education, health and engineering.
