Getting a body scan is a great tool to not only help you get started but also help you to stay on track.

If you’re not quite sure what body scans are or why they’re beneficial, then keep on reading to find out more.

1. Body scans reveal far more than traditional scales

Your standard bathroom scales only show your total weight. Solely relying on that number can discourage you and make you feel like you’re not progressing enough, or the way you want.

When you get a body scan, you will receive a detailed analysis of several health markers such as your:

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body fat percentage

Bone mass

Physique rating

Fitness age

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Body water percentage

Muscle mass

Visceral fat rating

And more!

Together, these measurements will give you a better picture of your overall health than just a simple number.

2. You can compare results

Whether you’ve joined a gym or are on a new fitness and health journey, getting a body scan is a great starting point. It essentially acts as a baseline for you to see how far you’ve come.

Say your first body scan told you that you had X amount of muscle mass and you wanted to gain more lean muscle. When you do your second body scan after 12 weeks, you’ll have a comparison to see that you have gained muscle. This will motivate you to keep going so you can see what your results are as time goes on.

3. You can set tangible goals

Another reason to get a body scan is that it will complement any goals you may have.

Your goal might be that you want to drop some body fat. Your bathroom scale won’t tell you how much fat you currently have, but a body scan will. Once you know what your body fat percentage is, you can confidently train and eat to align with your goal before your next scan.

When you do your follow-up body scan (we recommend every two to three months) you’ll be able to see whether you reduced body fat and not just general weight.

4. You can identify potential health risks

A body scan can also act as a preventative tool for future health problems. It can detect visceral fat which is generally stored around your abdominal organs. Too much visceral fat can lead to a variety of health issues such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

You can also find out your ‘fitness age’ which is an estimate of how fit you are compared to your actual age. If your fitness age is a lot higher than your actual age, it may prompt you to make some changes.

Muscle mass is another important thing to monitor which is often overlooked. As our bodies age, our muscle mass will start to deteriorate. This can happen faster to those who live unhealthy lifestyles and neglect their muscle mass. Premature loss of muscle mass can cause mobility and balance issues and ultimately lead to fatal falls.

5. Body scans are fast and efficient

Lastly, a body scan will display all that data in just a few minutes. It doesn’t take much of your time and is completely non-invasive and painless. To get the most out of your scan and to ensure accuracy, try to book all your scans around the same time of the day.

April promotion

Curtin Gym is currently offering FREE body scans for anyone who signs up for a membership in April.
