Curtin University has awarded leading legal practitioner, governance expert and mental health advocate Dr Andrew Lu AM an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his distinguished contribution to law, accountability, mental health and social inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Lu is the President of the Mental Health Tribunal of Western Australia and has made significant contributions to law and public life over more than three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his role with the Tribunal, he oversees decisions affecting people experiencing serious mental health challenges, helping safeguard their rights while supporting recovery, autonomy and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne<\/a> said Honorary Doctorates recognised individuals whose leadership and service had made a lasting contribution to their profession and the broader community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDr Lu has dedicated his career to advancing fairness, accountability and inclusion, while championing the rights and dignity of some of the most vulnerable members of our community,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHis work across the legal profession, mental health sector, arts governance and public service has helped shape more inclusive institutions and created positive change for countless Western Australians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr Lu has maintained a close connection with Curtin University as Chair of the Curtin Law School<\/a> Advisory Board since 2023 and as an Adjunct Professor in Curtin\u2019s Faculty of Business and Law<\/a> since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has mentored Curtin staff and students, and supported graduates throughout his legal career and previously served as a trusted external legal adviser to the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBy recognising Dr Andrew Lu as an Honorary Doctor of Laws, Curtin University is celebrating an extraordinary career defined by service, compassion and leadership,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHis commitment to justice, mental health, inclusion and education reflects the values we aspire to foster at Curtin and within the wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before joining the Tribunal in 2022, Dr Lu built a distinguished legal career spanning more than 25 years, including senior leadership and partnership roles with major Australian law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Widely recognised as one of Australia\u2019s leading health and aged care lawyers, he has also made substantial contributions to legal reform, policy development and legal education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A prolific educator and scholar, Dr Lu has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and several other leading professional bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout his career, Dr Lu has also been a passionate advocate for inclusion and community service, serving on the boards of major national organisations including SBS, the National Gallery of Australia Foundation and the Australian Youth Orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has held leadership positions with numerous arts, cultural and community organisations and helped establish national pro bono legal programs that have assisted disadvantaged Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDr Lu has been a tireless advocate for good governance, social cohesion and equal opportunity,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHis leadership has helped strengthen organisations across Australia, while his commitment to mentoring, education and public service has inspired others to contribute to their
