{"id":30082,"date":"2026-01-15T13:06:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T05:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=30082"},"modified":"2026-01-15T13:07:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T05:07:48","slug":"food-for-thought-plate-photos-help-australians-track-what-they-eat","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/food-for-thought-plate-photos-help-australians-track-what-they-eat\/","title":{"rendered":"Food for thought: Plate photos help Australians track what they eat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New research has revealed that taking photos of your food makes it easier to remember what and how much you eat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Curtin University study found using mobile phones made it simpler to collect accurate dietary data, suggesting that digital methods are important tools to guide health advice and nutrition policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/humanfactors.jmir.org\/2025\/1\/e79565\"><em>JMIR Human Factors<\/em><\/a>, found that most people were eager to record their diet but tools needed to be easy and quick to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants in the study were happy to use technology but said online food recall tools were time-consuming and found it difficult to remember the details of what they ate as they tried to monitor their food intake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research found participants strongly preferred snapping photos of their meals, as food photos made it easier for them to remember what and how much they consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most participants said taking pictures of their plates was the easiest and most accurate way to recall their diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First author and PhD candidate Janelle Healy, from Curtin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/learning-teaching\/health-sciences\/curtin-school-of-population-health\/\">School of Population Health<\/a>, said it was critical to improve dietary data collection methods as diet-related diseases like obesity, heart disease and diabetes are on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBetter data leads to better health advice,\u201d Mrs Healy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are busy, distracted and often eat on the go.
