{"id":29230,"date":"2025-09-08T22:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T14:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=29230"},"modified":"2025-09-05T12:58:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T04:58:31","slug":"new-report-reveals-impact-of-reforms-to-make-universities-fairer","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/new-report-reveals-impact-of-reforms-to-make-universities-fairer\/","title":{"rendered":"New report reveals impact of reforms to make universities fairer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (ACSES) has released its flagship annual report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acses.edu.au\/publication\/equity-insights-2025-policy-power-and-practice-for-a-fairer-australian-tertiary-education-system\/\">Equity Insights 2025: Policy, Power, and Practice for a Fairer<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acses.edu.au\/publication\/equity-insights-2025-policy-power-and-practice-for-a-fairer-australian-tertiary-education-system\/\">Australian Tertiary Education System<\/a><\/em>, bringing together 22 leading voices from across the higher education landscape to examine what has changed for student equity and what more needs to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACSES launched the report last at the Mercure Sydney at a welcome reception for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acses.edu.au\/event\/student-equity-in-an-era-of-change-2025-the-australian-student-equity-symposium\/\">Student Equity in an Era of Change 2025: The Australian Student Equity Symposium<\/a> at the University of Technology Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report includes university leaders, researchers, policymakers and students contemplating the future of equity in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable voices such as <strong>Professor Harlene Hayne<\/strong> (Curtin University Vice-Chancellor), <strong>Professor Margaret Sheil<\/strong> (Queensland University of Technology Vice-Chancellor), <strong>Professor the Hon<\/strong> <strong>Verity Firth AM<\/strong> (Vice-President Societal Impact, Equity and Engagement, UNSW), <strong>Distinguished Professor George Williams<\/strong> <strong>AO<\/strong> (Vice-Chancellor &amp; President, Western Sydney University), <strong>Sarah Bendall<\/strong> (National Student Ombudsman), and <strong>Ashlyn Horton<\/strong> (National Union of Students) address pressing issues such as Indigenous leadership and cultural safety, the impact of artificial intelligence on access and participation, disability inclusion, the student union voice, and pathways between vocational education and higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACSES Executive Director <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/shamit-saggar-c279b3d8\/\">Professor Shamit Saggar<\/a> said the report provided a unique snapshot of the challenges and opportunities shaping equity in higher education today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe report demonstrates the scale of change needed if we are to meet the ambitious equity targets set by the Australian Universities Accord,\u201d Professor Saggar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt also shows the sector is rich with ideas and committed voices.
