{"id":29150,"date":"2025-09-01T14:33:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T06:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=29150"},"modified":"2025-11-25T13:42:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:42:22","slug":"quintet-of-curtin-researchers-honoured-in-young-tall-poppy-science-awards","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/quintet-of-curtin-researchers-honoured-in-young-tall-poppy-science-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Quintet of Curtin researchers honoured in Young Tall Poppy Science Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An epidemiologist tackling global tuberculosis, a circular economy innovator, a plant scientist advancing crop resilience, a nanogeoscience pioneer and a geospatial intelligence expert are the Curtin University researchers recognised in the 2025 WA Young Tall Poppy Science <a href=\"https:\/\/aips.org.au\/2025ytpwinners\">Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prestigious awards, run by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (<a href=\"https:\/\/aips.org.au\/tall-poppy-campaign\/wa-tall-poppies\">AIPS<\/a>), recognise outstanding early-career scientists who combine world-class research with a passion for science communication and community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/kefyalew-alene-15b45f9b\/\">Associate Professor Kefyalew Alene<\/a> is an infectious diseases epidemiologist whose geospatial research is helping fight tuberculosis worldwide. Leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekids.org.au\/our-research\/infectious-diseases\/geospatial-and-tuberculosis-geotb\/\">GeoTB<\/a> Research Team at The Kids Research Institute Australia, his work integrates spatial analytics and epidemiology to inform global tuberculosis control and prevention strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A global leader in circular economy and zero-waste research, <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/atiq-zaman-3096c1a4\/\">Associate Professor Atiq Zaman<\/a> from the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.curtin.edu.au\/cusp\/about-cusp\/our-people\/\">CUSP<\/a>) is helping to shape sustainable practices, policies and collaborations both locally and internationally. He has important roles with the National Environmental Science Program, <a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/\">the UN Trade and Development<\/a>, the &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unsdsn.org\/our-work\/ceet\/\">UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition<\/a> and Curtin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalsouth.nexus\/\">Global South Nexus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/fatima-naim-abbb4534\/\">Dr Fatima Naim<\/a> is an agricultural scientist whose work in plant physiology and disease tolerance is advancing the fight against crop disease. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccdm.com.au\/\">Centre for Crop and Disease Management<\/a>, co-funded by Curtin University and GRDC, she leads research into the early stages of plant infection and recovery, driving innovation in disease resistance and crop resilience. Her work is exploring the value of leading-edge research capabilities such as spatial transcriptomics, the study of gene expression at a cellular level in plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key member of Curtin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jdlc.curtin.edu.au\/facilities\/geoscience-atom-probe-facility\/\">Geoscience Atom Probe<\/a> facility, <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/denis-fougerouse-62430260\/\">Dr Denis Fougerouse<\/a> is a geologist pioneering research in nanogeoscience. Dr Fougerouse leads research on how green energy elements form in rocks, and how we can best extract these metals to support the energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/yongze-song-35491f7e\/\">Dr Yongze Song<\/a> is a geospatial scientist at Curtin University, recognised globally for his innovations in geospatial intelligence.
