{"id":27798,"date":"2025-04-01T09:45:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T01:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=27798"},"modified":"2025-04-01T10:50:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T02:50:30","slug":"study-finds-children-exiting-the-youth-justice-system-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/study-finds-children-exiting-the-youth-justice-system-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds children exiting the youth justice system at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New Curtin-led research has found that young people who have had contact with the youth justice system face an increased risk of premature death, prompting calls for better support for these vulnerable children and adolescents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in <em>The<\/em> <em>Lancet Public Health<\/em>, the research team analysed 25 years of data, following 48,670 young people who had contact with the youth justice system in Queensland between 1993 and 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Study finds children exiting the youth justice system at risk\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SaZgiDygaa8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead researcher Professor Stuart Kinner, the Head of the Justice Health Group at Curtin University and Murdoch Children\u2019s Research Institute in Melbourne, said that this was the first ever comprehensive study of mortality outcomes among young people after contact with the youth justice system in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found that these young people were 4.2 times more likely than their community peers to die prematurely, with the most common causes of death being suicide, traffic accidents and drug poisoning. Most of these tragic deaths occurred before the age of 25,\u201d Professor Kinner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also found that more severe and prolonged contact with the criminal justice system was associated with a greater risk of death. Compared to those who had only been charged with an offence, the likelihood of premature death was 30 per cent higher for those who had been subjected to community supervision, and 90 per cent higher for those who had spent time in youth detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite this, 98 per cent of the deaths in our study happened in the community and not in custody. Although it is critical to prevent deaths in custody, we also need to ensure that young people who have been discharged from the youth justice system get the support they need, to help prevent these tragic and largely preventable deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Kinner said that government and community agencies need to work with these young people, and their carers and families, to make sure they get the help they need, when and where they need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYoung people who have had contact with the youth justice system may have difficult family relationships and are at an increased risk of homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorder, and risk-taking behaviours, making them particularly vulnerable,\u201d Professor Kinner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAchieving better outcomes for these young people will require coordinated, multi-sectoral investments in care that extend beyond the criminal justice system.
