{"id":26615,"date":"2024-11-05T13:15:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T05:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=26615"},"modified":"2024-11-08T16:06:22","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T08:06:22","slug":"tech-meets-tradition-curtin-and-dockers-showcase-indigenous-creativity","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/tech-meets-tradition-curtin-and-dockers-showcase-indigenous-creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech meets tradition: Curtin and Dockers showcase Indigenous creativity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 3D animation of a former AFLW player and an immersive virtual reality \u2018Welcome to Country\u2019 experience were among the inspiring creative projects on display last night at \u2018Yoowarl Koorl: ReconciliAction and Indigenous Futures\u2019, a showcase event highlighting Indigenous voices, cultural resilience and a shared commitment to \u2018reconciliAction\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by Curtin University the event celebrated a series of innovative, collaborative research projects created by Indigenous Fremantle Dockers past players together with researchers from Curtin\u2019s Faculty of Humanities, presenting powerful stories of identity, community and cultural connection through creative expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin\u2019s Dean of Indigenous Futures, <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/mandy-downing-d500e4ac\/\">Associate Professor Mandy Downing<\/a>, said the showcase was a visually impressive &nbsp;and thought-provoking display of creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese unique creative projects exemplify Curtin\u2019s dedication to Indigenous engagement, reconciliAction and innovation,\u201d Associate Professor Downing said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYoowarl Koorl, meaning \u2018come this way\u2019 in Noongar, is part of our ongoing journey of reconciliAction, creating a meaningful space for Indigenous stories, voices and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe project is a continuation of Curtin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-university-signs-with-the-fremantle-dockers\/\">long-running partnership<\/a> with the Fremantle Football Club, and celebrates a remarkable AFL record where Fremantle had at least one Indigenous player take to the field during an AFL match over an incredible 30-year streak, demonstrating reconciliAction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four key projects that featured at the showcase event combined cultural heritage with advanced technology and storytelling, including a podcast done by former Fremantle player Troy Cook and Curtin journalism lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/Glynn.Greensmith\/\">Dr Glynn Greensmith<\/a>, in which Cook reflects on personal growth, community impact and the importance of Indigenous storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another project, produced at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hive.curtin.edu.au\/\">Curtin HIVE<\/a> by Cassandra Edwards, <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/kerreen-ely-harper-f0206126\/\">Dr Kerreen Ely Harper<\/a> and former AFLW player Alicia Janz offered an immersive virtual reality \u2018Welcome to Country\u2019 experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collaboration involving former player Dale Kickett, writer <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/david-whish-wilson-7936fb97\/\">Dr David Whish-Wilson<\/a> and animator <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/jonathan-pillai-8763c774\/\">Jonathan Pillai<\/a>, both from Curtin, produced a 3D animation portraying Dale Kickett\u2019s story, combining visual art with Indigenous narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on display were the results of a song workshop led by renowned Indigenous author <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/kim-scott-d7377b31\/\">John Curtin Distinguished Professor Kim Scott<\/a> which explored the power of music as a medium for sharing community stories.
