{"id":21586,"date":"2023-05-11T12:23:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T04:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=21586"},"modified":"2023-05-12T15:29:24","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T07:29:24","slug":"new-noongar-child-drawings-unveiled-in-anniversary-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/new-noongar-child-drawings-unveiled-in-anniversary-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"New Noongar child drawings unveiled in anniversary celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Another 10 drawings created by Australian First Nations Stolen Generations children have been added to The Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup Children\u2019s Artwork, ahead of the tenth anniversary celebrations of its return to Noongar Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year marks 10 years since the Collection of Carrolup Children\u2019s Artwork returned to Western Australia and the John Curtin Gallery at Curtin University \u2013 under the guidance of the Carrolup Elders Reference Group \u2013 became the custodian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the anniversary celebrations, the John Curtin Gallery is exhibiting never-before-seen footage of the child artists creating their precious works in the 1940s, after they had been forcibly taken from their families and interned at the remote WA settlement of Carrolup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the new works featured in the anniversary exhibition includes three drawings that were donated by Curtin Fine Arts graduate Priscilla Kelly, the granddaughter of Charles (Charlie) Cook who was the Carrolup school inspector in 1950.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--1000x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--1000x500.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--740x370.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--480x240.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--1260x630.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Priscilla-Kelly_RESIZED-FOR-WEB--1520x760.jpg 1520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Priscilla Kelly, pictured with the donated works that are on display in the anniversary exhibition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>John Curtin Gallery\u2019s Carrolup Manager Kathleen Toomath, whose late mother Alma was the last-known surviving Carrolup artist, said each new work discovered uncovered a new page in our history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery single work created by the children of Carrolup offers another window into their story and our history with every new connection taking us a step closer to healing and reconciling the past,\u201d Ms Toomath said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Curtin Gallery Director Chris Malcolm said the striking and accomplished collection created by the children was bigger than ever for the anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother 10 works by Carrolup child artists have been discovered recently. This adds significantly to the Collection, taking the total number of Carrolup school pieces to more than 130, increasing our understanding of the hearts and minds of these resilient children during a deeply traumatic time in their lives,\u201d Mr Malcolm said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The children\u2019s works had laid undiscovered in storage at Colgate University for 40 years before, and in a gesture of goodwill, they were returned to Noongar Boodja in 2013, completing a remarkable 63-year journey circumnavigating the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ellen Kraly, from Colgate University, who is visiting Perth for the tenth anniversary celebrations, said she was delighted to see the children\u2019s works continuing to inspire important discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe journey to enlighten the world with the significance of the stories of Carrolup is an inspiration, a \u2018north star\u2019 as the abolitionists would say, to be emulated far and wide. The children of Carrolup, and all who have followed them, continue to lead us on a journey to reflect on the past and pursue a positive path forward,\u201d Professor Kraly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Carrolup artists became prolific, surprising the world with their ability to reveal a depth of understanding of their country \u2013 their Noongar Boodja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An anniversary exhibition, <em>Kalyagool Karni-Wangkiny [Telling Truth Always]<\/em> \u2013 <em>A Decade of Carrolup<\/em>, runs from May 12 to July 9 at the John Curtin Gallery (Building 200A, Curtin University, Kent Street, Bentley, Western Australia). The Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 11am to 5pm, and Sundays, 12 noon to 4pm.
