{"id":19171,"date":"2019-02-05T22:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/australias-oldest-phd-graduate-becomes-a-doctor-at-94\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T09:22:41","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T01:22:41","slug":"australias-oldest-phd-graduate-becomes-a-doctor-at-94","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/australias-oldest-phd-graduate-becomes-a-doctor-at-94\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s oldest PhD graduate becomes a doctor at 94"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Australia\u2019s oldest PhD graduate Dr David Bottomley, learning is a life-long journey.<\/p>\n<p>At 94 years of age, Dr Bottomley graduated from Curtin University last night with a Doctor of Philosophy after completing his thesis, which examined the teaching methods of five progressive English educators who introduced an understanding of science into the curriculum from 1816 to 1885.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/David-and-Anne-Bottomley.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry congratulated Dr Bottomley on completing his PhD and recording his place in the history books as Australia\u2019s oldest recorded PhD graduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr Bottomley\u2019s incredible achievement shows age is definitely no barrier to furthering your education and his graduation will be an inspiration to many,\u201d Professor Terry said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bottomley, a Melbourne-based father-of-four, grandfather to 13 and great-grandfather to one, said he completed his PhD part-time and finished in seven years \u2013 a year ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first feeling I had was one of relief and utter numbness \u2013 I think that\u2019s a feeling shared by most postgraduate students after any big exam or assignment,\u201d Dr Bottomley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been working on it for so many years and I suddenly had permission to come out of my academic cave and wasn\u2019t quite sure what to do with all my free time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Dr-David-Bottomley-Picture-credit-Jaimi-Chisholm-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>And even though he intends to make use of that by going to the cinema, taking walks in the park and spending more time with his wife, Anne, of 68 years, Dr Bottomley already has plans to continue his education studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m already looking at more ways to apply and improve my basic skills, and hopefully help stir the creative pot,\u201d Dr Bottomley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the ideas of the headmasters I studied are worth repeating today in order to instil that creativity and sense of learning in the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to extend my Doctorate finding on the impact of creativity in school curricula and I am already thinking of ways the lessons learnt through my PhD can be applied to today\u2019s school students as well as among Australia\u2019s ageing population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bottomley said he wanted to complete his PhD at Curtin in order to work with John Curtin Distinguished Professor David Treagust, from Curtin\u2019s School of Education, who supervised his thesis, titled \u2018<em>Science, Education and Social Vision of Five Nineteenth Century Headmasters<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, education is something you live in; it\u2019s a life force as (Nobel Prize in Literature 1925 recipient) George Bernard Shaw might have called it,\u201d Dr Bottomley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think our learning journey ever ends.
