Curtin University\u2019s latest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Environmental Studies: A Global Perspective<\/em>, is designed to give participants a firm grounding in the basic principles of environmental studies, and how these factors are manifested in urban, rural and natural areas throughout the world.<\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Teri Balser, Curtin Dean of Teaching and Learning for\u00a0Science and Engineering, said environmental studies was\u00a0an integration of arts and humanities, social science, and natural and physical sciences, all\u00a0contributing\u00a0to our understanding of environmental issues and solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnvironmental studies\u00a0is\u00a0broader than\u00a0environmental science, or even sustainability,\u201d\u00a0Professor Balser\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is something that belongs to everyone, in every field.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy bringing together many different disciplines, environmental studies helps us address some of the\u00a0world\u2019s\u00a0most important and complex problems, such as sustainable resource use, energy consumption, development, and food security \u2014 issues that affect our survival as a species,\u201d Professor Balser said.<\/p>\n

Professor Joseli Macedo, Curtin Head of School of Built Environment, who will co-facilitate the MOOC with Professor Balser, said the course would take a solutions-focused approach to environmental issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cParticipants will engage with this MOOC by observing, analysing and getting involved in their own communities,\u201d Professor Macedo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will share explorations of their local environments with other participants and discuss the challenges we face in different parts of the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intention is to create a global learning and action community that will think creatively about potential solutions to environmental issues in the 21st century,\u201d Professor Macedo said.<\/p>\n

Environmental Studies: A Global Perspective<\/em> is the fourth MOOC Curtin has developed and offered in partnership with edX, a world-leading online learning destination and MOOC provider.<\/p>\n

Curtin is the only university in Western Australia in the edX Consortium.<\/p>\n
