New research from the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC) demonstrates that increasing women\u2019s representation on corporate boards can lower the incidence of company fraud.<\/p>\n
Dr Astghik Mavisakalyan, Senior Research Fellow at BCEC, conducted the comprehensive study of 128 publicly listed companies in Australia as part of the first attempt at examining the relationship between women on boards and corporate fraud.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe investigated whether there\u2019s an empirical link between gender diversity in corporate leadership and the occurrence of fraud through examining the period leading up to the global financial crisis,\u201d Dr Mavisakalyan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere have been modest increases in the representation of women in senior leadership positions in Australia in recent times, although women remain markedly under-represented on corporate boards.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the 128 companies included in the study, 38.5 per cent had a least one female director and only 3.9 per cent had a maximum of two female directors.<\/p>\n
Approximately 14 per cent of these companies were identified as having at least one incident of fraudulent behaviour across a five-year period, including theft of company assets, false invoicing and fraudulent use of company credit cards.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe study demonstrates that an increase in women\u2019s representation on company boards is associated with a decreased probability of fraud. In fact, a 1 percentage point increase in the share of women on boards lowers the probability of fraud by 1.06 percentage points,\u201d Dr Mavisakalyan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is equivalent to a reduction of around 7 per cent in the probability of fraud.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur findings suggest that policy initiatives by groups such as the ASX Corporate Governance Council to promote gender diversity on boards may be justified not only in terms of gender equity, but also in terms of improving board monitoring effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n
