{"id":18579,"date":"2016-04-20T02:43:39","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-signs-mou-with-mali-research-institution\/"},"modified":"2016-04-20T02:43:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:43:39","slug":"curtin-signs-mou-with-mali-research-institution","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-signs-mou-with-mali-research-institution\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin signs MoU with Mali research institution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University\u2019s Faculty of Science and Engineering recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with the \u00c9cole Nationale d&#8217;Ing\u00e9nieurs Abderhamane Baba Tour\u00e9 in Bamko, Mali, opening up possibilities for academic links between the two countries in the field of mining engineering.<\/p>\n<p>After a delegation led by the Mali Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Me Mountaga Tall, and Malian Ambassador to Australia, Mahamane Elhadji Bania Tour\u00e9, initially visited Western Australia (WA) in December 2015, further talks resulted in the Curtin MoU signing earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin\u2019s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of International, Professor Seth Kunin, said the MoU recognised Curtin\u2019s ability to assist in developing a mining engineering curriculum at the \u00c9cole Nationale d&#8217;Ing\u00e9nieurs Abderhamane Baba Tour\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the agreement is still in the very early stages of development, we are hoping that the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin will be able to assist with the capacity building of mining engineering education in Mali through academic training opportunities at the Curtin WA School of Mines,\u201d Professor Kunin said.<\/p>\n<p>The Honorary Consul for the Republic of Mali in WA, Max de Vietri, said WA exploration and mining expertise could be adapted to suit Mali&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMali and WA share similar geological strata as well as climatic conditions and therefore have similar prospectivity in terms of mineral potential, as well as similarities in their surface expression,\u201d Dr de Vietri said.<\/p>\n<p>Mali is the third largest gold mining country in Africa.
