{"id":18470,"date":"2015-09-18T08:21:45","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T00:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/assisted-finger-orthosis-wins-innovation-award-hands-down\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T09:17:45","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T01:17:45","slug":"assisted-finger-orthosis-wins-innovation-award-hands-down","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/assisted-finger-orthosis-wins-innovation-award-hands-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Assisted finger orthosis wins innovation award hands down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 3D printable hand exoskeleton earned a round of applause today at the Curtin Commercial Innovation Awards, netting its inventors $15,000 and valuable commercialisation assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The Assisted Finger Orthosis project was developed by mechatronics\u00a0engineering lecturer and researcher Dr Lei Cui, mechatronics engineering students Anthony Phan and Otto Seyfarth,\u00a0Dean Research and Graduate Studies Health Sciences\u00a0Professor Garry Allison, occupational therapy clinical\/professional fellow\u00a0David Parsons and Professor Stelarc from the Alternate Anatomies Laboratory at Curtin University.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TFTNlO2Ov7U[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>Dr Cui said the finger orthosis project is the simplest design that can achieve active movement of all three finger joints from a single actuator or driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Robotic exoskeletons can protect a patient\u2019s tendons while minimising the risk of complications after hand tendon surgery,\u201d Dr Cui said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA tailor made exoskeleton that fits an individual\u2019s hand perfectly will define the future of hand rehabilitation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Curtin Commercial Innovation Awards were established in 2007 to celebrate the commercialisation efforts of Curtin staff and students. The competition is now a focal point of the innovation calendar in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Curtin\u2019s Office of IP Commercialisation Rohan McDougall said one of the best ways for universities to improve commercial outcomes was to conduct world-class research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research recognised by today\u2019s awards demonstrates a growing recognition of Curtin as a quality research institution through our constant improvement in global university rankings,\u201d Mr McDougall said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ip-commercialisation-rohan-mcdougall-mr.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ip-commercialisation-rohan-mcdougall-mr.jpg\" alt=\"Director of Curtin\u2019s Office of IP Commercialisation Rohan McDougall \" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s competition attracted a record 46 applications from across the University with 12 applicants shortlisted to present to a panel of judges looking at novelty, level of development, market potential and competitive advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Runner-up prizes of $5000 each were awarded to the following innovators:<\/p>\n<p>Innovation in Business: Rate My Space \u2013 Dr
