{"id":18414,"date":"2015-05-18T02:06:46","date_gmt":"2015-05-17T18:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-medical-school-approval\/"},"modified":"2015-05-18T02:06:46","modified_gmt":"2015-05-17T18:06:46","slug":"curtin-medical-school-approval","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-medical-school-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin Medical School approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University welcomes the Federal Government\u2019s approval for its Medical School.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year direct-entry medical degree will help the State meet an urgent doctor shortage.\u00a0 It will commence in 2017 with 60 domestic students per annum, increasing to 120 (110 domestic and 10 international students) by 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said that the undergraduate medical degree will have a strong emphasis on primary care, which will position graduates well for rural and remote practice, as well as outer suburban locations, where there is an acute shortage of doctors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program\u2019s proposed commencement date and staged growth will ensure the availability of post-graduation clinical places for students,\u201d Professor Terry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch has shown that hospitals in the eastern and southern suburbs will welcome medical students and this will be supported by placements in aged-care and mental health facilities as well as general practice and newly created clinical schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll capital funding will be provided by Curtin and the WA State Government.
