{"id":18230,"date":"2014-01-28T08:59:31","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T00:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-scoops-half-ao-awards\/"},"modified":"2014-01-28T08:59:31","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T00:59:31","slug":"curtin-scoops-half-ao-awards","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-scoops-half-ao-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin scoops half of WA&#8217;s AO awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University academic staff received half of the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) awards in\u00a0Western Australia, with three academics receiving the accolade in this year\u2019s Australia Day honours.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mike Daube, Professor Peter Newman and Associate Professor Ted Wilkes were each\u00a0announced as receiving an AO this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Daube from the Faculty of Health Sciences was honoured for distinguished service to\u00a0medicine, particularly in the area of public health policy and reform, through advisory roles with leading\u00a0national and international organisations and to youth.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Newman, Director of the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP), was\u00a0recognised for distinguished service to science education as an academic and researcher, through\u00a0contributions to urban design and transport sustainability and to the community.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Wilkes, from Curtin\u2019s National Drug Research Institute was awarded for\u00a0distinguished service to the Indigenous community as a leading researcher in the area of public health\u00a0and welfare, for youth in Western Australia and to the provision of legal support services.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling said he was delighted for the recipients and extremely\u00a0proud that Curtin staff received half of the AOs awarded in WA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese honours not only reflect the tremendous work of the staff concerned, but also the University\u2019s\u00a0commitment to providing leadership on real world issues affecting the wider community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a fantastic achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike Daube is a tireless public commentator on health matters and his hard work has helped ensure the\u00a0subjects of problem drinking and smoking are not only discussed widely but also tackled rigorously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Newman is another academic who is often in the public eye for his campaigning on transport\u00a0issues.
