{"id":18140,"date":"2013-07-24T06:49:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-23T22:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-honours-pioneer-in-wa-pharmacy-education\/"},"modified":"2013-07-24T06:49:09","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T22:49:09","slug":"curtin-honours-pioneer-in-wa-pharmacy-education","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-honours-pioneer-in-wa-pharmacy-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin honours pioneer in WA pharmacy education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University today paid tribute to one of Western Australia\u2019s pioneers of pharmacy education by naming a laboratory in his honour.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Geoffrey Tucker, 80, from Forrestfield, was recognised for his lifetime commitment and service to the pharmacy profession and WA community.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tucker\u2019s work and achievements were celebrated at a naming ceremony officiated by Curtin University\u2019s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeanette Hacket.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hacket said the University was delighted to recognise Mr Tucker for his outstanding contribution to pharmacy education. \u201cHe played a key role in the development of the first three-year, full-time academic course in pharmacy in Western Australia, which commenced in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Acting Head of the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) School of Pharmacy, Mr Tucker focussed on providing pharmacy students with practical, hands-on experience during their degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe proposed establishing a \u2018model dispensary\u2019 where students could practise their prescription dispensing skills. This idea, considered pioneering at the time, is still the model used today to teach pharmacy students across Australia,\u201d Professor Hacket said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Model Pharmacy\u2019 teaching space in Curtin\u2019s multi-million dollar, purpose-built pharmacy facility ensures our students gain an authentic experience in a simulated consulting and dispensing environment, which includes a state-of-the-art robotic dispensing system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tucker was dedicated to the concept of lifelong learning and helped to introduce a number of postgraduate pharmacy diplomas at Curtin, which were eventually extended to master and PhD offerings.<\/p>\n<p>In 1953, Mr Tucker received the Webster Memorial Gold Medal for excellence in pharmacy studies and in 1968 became an Honorary Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Western Australia in recognition of his exceptional input to pharmacy education.<\/p>\n<p>The newly named Geoffrey Tucker Laboratory, in Building 300 at Curtin\u2019s Bentley Campus can accommodate 90 people, and is used by students across the University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University today paid tribute to one of Western Australia\u2019s pioneers of pharmacy education by naming a laboratory in his honour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4275,"featured_media":9732,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_oasis_is_in_workflow":0,"_oasis_original":0,"_oasis_task_priority":"","_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","wds_primary_category":0,"wds_primary_research-areas":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"research-areas":[],"class_list":["post-18140","media-release","type-media-release","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-campus-and-global-community"],"acf":{"post_options":{"":null,"additional_content":{"title":"","content":"","image":false},"related_courses":false,"credits":{"author":"","photographer":"","media":false},"display_author":true,"banner":{"image":false}}},"featured_image":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pioneer-in-WA-pharmacy-education.jpg","author_meta":{"first_name":"Curtin","last_name":"University","display_name":"Curtin University"},"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":{"enabledWorkflows":[]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media-release\/18140","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media-release"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/media-release"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4275"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media-release\/18140\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/9732"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18140"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18140"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18140"},{"taxonomy":"research-areas","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/research-areas?post=18140"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
