{"id":18097,"date":"2013-05-10T02:56:03","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T18:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-improves-in-worlds-elite-subject-rankings\/"},"modified":"2013-05-10T02:56:03","modified_gmt":"2013-05-09T18:56:03","slug":"curtin-improves-in-worlds-elite-subject-rankings","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-improves-in-worlds-elite-subject-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin improves in world\u2019s elite subject rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University has improved its ranking in education, environmental sciences, psychology and agriculture and forestry in the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject of the world\u2019s top 200 institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The findings revealed that this year Curtin ranked in 12 of the 30 published subjects with an outstanding result for education which rose to number 41 in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket, said QS World University Rankings were regarded as one of the three most influential and widely observed international rankings and Curtin was very proud to have improved its global standing this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese rankings are drawn up on the basis of academic opinion, recruiter opinion and citations,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtin\u2019s increased performance is testament to our status as a research-intensive university, determined by the quality, scale and significance of its research, as assessed against national and international benchmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Academic disciplines are sorted into five categories: arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences and social sciences and management, each of which shows the top universities in that particular field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtin\u2019s ratings in the field of education were boosted by the international reputation for excellence of the Science and Mathematics, Education Centre (SMEC). The Centre has the world\u2019s largest doctoral program in science and mathematics education, as well as some of the world\u2019s most-highly cited science education researchers,\u201d Professor Hacket said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe improvement in psychology reflects the vast array of cutting-edge research projects run by established industry professionals and experts who work in the area, and provide support to students and contribute to course development.
