{"id":17982,"date":"2012-09-17T02:19:17","date_gmt":"2012-09-16T18:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-law-degree-approved\/"},"modified":"2012-09-17T02:19:17","modified_gmt":"2012-09-16T18:19:17","slug":"curtin-law-degree-approved","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-law-degree-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin law degree approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin University will offer a four-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from next year.<\/p>\n<p>The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia has approved the undergraduate LLB course proposal, which will be offered through the Curtin Business School (CBS).<\/p>\n<p>Curtin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeanette Hacket, said the degree would enhance CBS\u2019 reputation for offering a comprehensive range of business courses which produced job-ready graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBS is Western Australia\u2019s largest business school and the addition of the Bachelor of Laws will build on its strengths and complement its existing discipline areas such as Commerce and Business Law,\u201d Professor Hacket said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Paul Fairall, Foundation Dean of Law, who has helped to oversee the establishment of the new program, said the LLB course would provide students with flexible study pathways including the ability to complete the four-year degree in a shorter timeframe, through trimester-based studies in their second and third years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents will also be able to do a variety of double-degree programs that are specifically focused on the needs of industry, including units focusing on the resource sector, and governance issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Fairall said the new LLB course would take 120 students in first semester in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Students wishing to study the course in 2013 can include the course in their Tertiary Institutions Service Centre preferences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note to editors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Professor Paul Fairall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Fairall, the Foundation Dean of Law at Curtin University is one of Australia\u2019s longest serving law deans.\u00a0 He recently completed a five-year term as Foundation Dean of Law at the University of South Australia, which after only four years produced its first law graduates.
