The Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute has formed a new partnership with multinational services firm Arup to deliver collaborative research in the area of sustainable development.<\/p>\n
As part of the three-year partnership, CUSP Director Professor Peter Newman will work closely with Arup staff across Australia on projects to overcome planning issues in urban and regional areas.<\/p>\n
Such issues are related to climate change, carbon management and improving the built environment as well as economic issues to do with more productive infrastructure and more socially acceptable urban planning.<\/p>\n
With head offices in London, Arup employs more than 10,000 planners, designers, engineers and consultants to deliver major capital works projects across the globe.<\/p>\n
Arup has contributed to many notable projects including the Sydney Opera House, the Swan Bells in Perth, major new low carbon cities in China and the Beijing and London Olympics.<\/p>\n
Professor Peter Newman said the partnership demonstrated Arup and CUSP\u2019s commitment to the environment and best practice urban planning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThroughout its history, Arup has led the way with providing innovative and creative solutions to large scale projects,\u201d Professor Newman said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis partnership shows that they are dedicated to ensuring future projects take into consideration latest findings on sustainable planning practices.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt also ensures that CUSP PhD students and staff are involved in practical demonstrations of their research.<\/p>\n
\u201cCUSP currently has 55 PhD candidates researching how we can create better futures for our cities and regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cArup will be able to use that research to inform planning decisions for upcoming projects.\u201d<\/p>\n
