{"id":17902,"date":"2012-03-15T02:35:27","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T18:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/proposed-new-law-degree-for-curtin-university\/"},"modified":"2012-03-15T02:35:27","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T18:35:27","slug":"proposed-new-law-degree-for-curtin-university","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/proposed-new-law-degree-for-curtin-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed new law degree for Curtin University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The development of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree has been granted internal approval by the Curtin University Council.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed degree would be offered through Curtin Business School (CBS).<\/p>\n<p>Vice-Chancellor Jeanette Hacket said the full course proposal will now be developed and submitted for approval, both internally and from the Legal Practice Board in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtin will work closely with the Legal Practice Board to ensure the proposed Bachelor of Laws exceeds statutory requirements,\u201d Professor Hacket said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also seek to have full industry accreditation for the Bachelor of Laws from the outset, before any student intake occurs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is proposed that Curtin\u2019s Bachelor of Laws would provide students with flexible study pathways and a variety of double degree programs specially focussed on the needs of industry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professor Paul Fairall has been appointed as Foundation Dean-Designate of Law to oversee the establishment of the new program.<\/p>\n<p>He was previously the Foundation Dean of Law at the University of South Australia, advancing their Law School from the proposal stage to student intake in the space of one year.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Fairall said he hoped to establish similar success with Curtin\u2019s Bachelor of Laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBS is Western Australia\u2019s largest business school, offering a comprehensive range of business courses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe addition of a Bachelor of Laws will build on the strengths of CBS and complement its existing discipline areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Chris Finn, who worked closely with Professor Fairall in his previous roles, has been appointed to assist with the development of the program framework.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note to editors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Professor Paul Fairall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Fairall has been appointed Foundation Dean-Designate of Law at Curtin University.<br \/>\nProfessor Fairall is one of Australia\u2019s longest serving law deans.\u00a0 He recently completed a five year term as Foundation Dean of Law at the University of South Australia, which after only four years produced its first law graduates and a world class research ranking in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Initiative.
