{"id":17846,"date":"2011-11-25T04:11:23","date_gmt":"2011-11-24T20:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/daniel-makes-a-difference\/"},"modified":"2011-11-25T04:11:23","modified_gmt":"2011-11-24T20:11:23","slug":"daniel-makes-a-difference","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/daniel-makes-a-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniel makes a difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hard-working 19-year-old Mandurah man is helping Curtin University to reduce its environmental footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Nunn, who has a developmental disability, has been working part-time at Curtin\u2019s School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work for the past five months helping to ensure the paper waste of its 60 employees is sorted and recycled once a week.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Head of the School, Associate Professor Angus Buchanan said engaging someone with a disability has had many wonderful benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel is\u00a0making a real contribution by raising the profile about recycling on campus,&#8221; Associate Professor Buchanan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s dedicated, takes great pride in his work, and has reduced paper waste at Curtin. He has also made a lot of friends and is an inspiring role model to us all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s mum Joanne Nunn said he really enjoyed his work at Curtin University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This job gives Daniel a sense of belonging, the chance to increase his confidence, learn new skills, meet new people and make a genuine difference,&#8221; Ms Nunn said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of four jobs that Daniel undertakes weekly and being employed helps him participate in community life in similar ways to his peers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to thank Tom Sokolov, Daniel\u2019s mentor, and everyone at Curtin who has made this possible, and to the many people in our lives who have ensured that Daniel can live the life of a typical 19-year-old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Saturday 3 December is International Day of People with Disability and celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability in our community.
