{"id":17832,"date":"2011-11-04T04:59:56","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T20:59:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/wapp-awards-winners-announced\/"},"modified":"2011-11-04T04:59:56","modified_gmt":"2011-11-03T20:59:56","slug":"wapp-awards-winners-announced","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/wapp-awards-winners-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"WApp Awards winners announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A mobile application designed to organise thousands of volunteers around Australia has taken first prize at the WApp Awards ceremony, held at the Burswood Convention Centre, yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Kenworthy of youth volunteer organisation, Big Help Mob, said the app would assist not-for-profit organisations to reach thousands of \u2018super keen\u2019 young people willing to lend a helping hand around Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-six per cent of Australian non-profit organisations are saying they need more volunteers to help them carry out their community work and initiatives,\u201d Mr Kenworthy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis app will help to bring those volunteers to the organisations when they need them through a number of features, including a core social function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people want to know what their friends are doing to help and by having access to those networks through this app, they can choose to join in or make their own suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also allow people to plan their volunteering activities, as well as receiving instant notification of opportunities as they become available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtin Director of IP Commercialisation, Rohan McDougall, said the judges were extremely impressed with the quality of applicants at this year\u2019s WApp Awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people at the Awards also said the Big Help Mob presentation was one of the best they had ever seen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Kenworthy\u2019s app is a fine example of the quality of innovation coming out of Western Australia.
