Exploring the humanitarian challenges associated with extreme natural events will be the theme of a joint Engineers Australia and Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering half-day seminar at Curtin University on 15 September 2011.<\/p>\n
Four expert panellists, including FESA Bush Fire & Environmental Protection Branch Manager, Ralph Smith, Kestrel Group Ltd Director, David Brunsdon, Curtin University Architect and Project Manager, Charles Boyle, and UWA Oceans Institute Professor, Chari Pattiaratchi, will share their professional experience and insight into designing for and managing impact of earthquakes, bushfires, storms and floods in developed and developing communities.<\/p>\n
Head of Curtin\u2019s School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Professor Tony Lucey, said the seminar would provide a unique opportunity for local government, emergency services personnel and the general public to engage with the panellists on the social challenges facing engineers, scientists, disaster managers and planners throughout the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven the recent earthquake in Christchurch, tsunami in Japan, storms in Perth and the US, and bushfires both nationally and around Perth, we expect the seminar will hold a particular significance for those looking into future management and planning of extreme natural events,\u201d Professor Lucey said.<\/p>\n
