{"id":17641,"date":"2010-09-28T02:21:47","date_gmt":"2010-09-27T18:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/a-10000-career-head-start\/"},"modified":"2010-09-28T02:21:47","modified_gmt":"2010-09-27T18:21:47","slug":"a-10000-career-head-start","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/a-10000-career-head-start\/","title":{"rendered":"A $10,000 career head start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A $10,000 cadetship will be offered to students who start a mining engineering or metallurgy degree at the Western Australian School of Mines next year.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty WA School of Mines (WASM) cadetships will be available to students who select a mining or metallurgy course in Kalgoorlie as their first preference for tertiary study in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The cadetships, facilitated by the WASM Graduates Association (WASMGA) in conjunction with the mining industry and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, will also link a student with a mining company and create the opportunity of vacation employment.<\/p>\n<p>WASMGA President Tony James said the cadetships would give students a fantastic head start in their career.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cNot only will the recipients of these cadetships receive financial assistance, they will also be linked to a mining company,\u201d Mr James said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will provide students with the chance to build relationships with people in the industry and increase their chances of gaining valuable vacation employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-year mining engineering student Ashlee McKenna received the cadetship last year and said there were benefits to studying in the heart of the Goldfields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is great studying a mining-related course in Kalgoorlie where the mines are because it gives you a more hands-on experience,\u201d Miss McKenna said.<\/p>\n<p>Miss McKenna is sponsored by Barrick Gold and has three months paid vacation work lined up over the Christmas break.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cadetship money has been enough to get me through the entire year this year and the vacation work will also help financially for next year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s given me a good start.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WASM Director Professor Steve Hall praised the cadetships and the benefits it offered students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a further demonstration of the fantastic industry support our students receive from day one at Kalgoorlie,&#8221; Professor Hall said.<\/p>\n<p>Cadetship applications close Friday, January 7, 2011.
