{"id":17612,"date":"2010-06-30T02:50:31","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T18:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-photo-competition-explores-beach-bush-and-backyard\/"},"modified":"2025-02-06T15:51:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T07:51:12","slug":"curtin-photo-competition-explores-beach-bush-and-backyard","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-photo-competition-explores-beach-bush-and-backyard\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin photo competition explores beach, bush and backyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Curtin University National Science Week photo competition is providing amateur photographers with the chance to celebrate the beauty of WA\u2019s bush, beaches and backyards.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, open to people of all ages, runs until 7 August.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin\u2019s Associate Professor Grant Wardell-Johnson said the competition aimed to increase awareness of WA\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith areas such as the South West \u2014 the only biodiversity hotspot in Australia \u2014 there are many opportunities for amateur photographers to showcase its uniqueness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>John Curtin Gallery Director, Christopher Malcolm, said the program would also encourage greater understanding of the significance of the environment to artistic works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe natural environment has always been one of the greatest inspirations to works of art,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntrants will be able to find out exactly how art and the environment can work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photo competition has three categories: Beach, Bush, and Backyard. Anyone can enter by uploading a photo on the website\u00a0with a title and short description of how the image showcases WA biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Prizes include iPads for each of the category winners, and will be announced on 23 August.<\/p>\n<p>National Science Week runs between 14 and 22 August and is designed to increase awareness and interest in science throughout Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin is a proud supporter of National Science Week and conducts a range of activities during August.
