Curtin University of Technology\u2019s WA School of Mines (WASM) is providing year 12 students with the opportunity to find out what a career in mining is all about.<\/p>\n
Acting Head of WASM, Professor Bert Veenendaal, said the five-day Focus on Mining camp to be held in July would provide students with a real-life mining experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe camp provides a fully immersive experience showing what the mining industry can offer in terms of a career,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an excellent opportunity for high school students to explore options for their future career paths.\u201d<\/p>\n
The camp will be held from 5-9 July for Year 12 TEE students interested in maths and science and who may be considering studying mining and resources related courses at university.<\/p>\n
Professor Veenendaal said attendees would have the chance to meet industry professionals, visit operational mine sites, participate in hands on workshops and get a taste of the mining lifestyle.<\/p>\n
First-year Curtin student Shaun Holmes, 17, said he chose to study at WASM after participating in the camp.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was also interested in studying a science degree at university, as I have always had a passion for chemistry, but before Focus on Mining I did not know what sort of career options this would provide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe camp provides metropolitan and regional students with a chance to find out about the options that the mining industry provides to graduates with science and engineering degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shaun also has a bit of advice for students hoping to study science, engineering or mining at university.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo the most advanced maths you can, as it will open a number of study opportunities at university,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
