Curtin University of Technology fashion student Rebecca Timson will get the chance to show off her award-winning gown at Australia\u2019s largest fashion trade event in Sydney next month.<\/p>\n
The Melville resident is the only WA designer chosen to take part in a special exhibition in the Avant Garde Gallery at Fashion Exposed.<\/p>\n
“This particular gown has given me much success and I\u2019m really excited to be given the chance to exhibit my dress at an event this big,” Ms Timson said.<\/p>\n
“The gown was inspired by Dorothea MacKellar\u2019s poem My Country.<\/em> As I was looking over the dry sandy hills of WA with this poem echoing in my ear the design came to life. The sunburnt country is represented in the colour pallet of gold and brown.<\/p>\n “The dress has a full-bodied skirt which represents the \u2018sweeping plains.\u2019 The \u2018ragged mountains\u2019 come to life with the organza and crystals holding its form to create peaks and valleys and \u2018the droughts and flooding rains’ is symbolised in the lining with chocolate brown hues.”<\/p>\n The Disrupted<\/em> gown won the heat at the NRA Australian Fashion Design Awards held in Perth. It was also featured on the red carpet at SYLEAID 2009 and in a national fashion magazine.<\/p>\n Ms Timson said she hoped her involvement in Fashion Exposed would help kick-start her career.<\/p>\n “I hope to start my own business. I love making gowns but am also interested in ready-to-wear and bridal,” she said.<\/p>\n Fashion Exposed opens at the Sydney Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour on February 14.
