\nNaming and Identity – A Free Public Lecture at the John Curtin Gallery

The John Curtin Gallery will present a free lunchtime talk on Wednesday 14 May at 12.30pm by Aileen Marwung Walsh from the Department of History, UWA.
\nAileen, who is studying for her doctorate, will discuss two aspects of her research on the naming of Aboriginal People in Western Australia.<\/p>\n
Ms Marwung Walsh will explain how in the aboriginal community, people often think they know where a name comes from, whether it is a specific town, or whether it is a Nyoongar name or not. However, family names have actually moved and don’t necessarily indicate the ancestry or country of origin of a family due to the removal and transplanting of families from their country.<\/p>\n
The John Curtin Gallery is currently presenting Brook Andrew: Eye to Eye, as part of FotoFreo 2008. The exhibition spans the artist’s practice over the past decade.
\nAndrew has created a powerful body of work that challenges dominant points of view regarding Indigenous people and issues of identity, history, traditional culture and language.<\/p>\n

The John Curtin Gallery is open to the public and entry is free. Opening hours are between 12pm and 5pm Monday to Friday.
