{"id":17262,"date":"2009-08-04T05:00:06","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T21:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/a-night-of-astronomical-excitement\/"},"modified":"2009-08-04T05:00:06","modified_gmt":"2009-08-03T21:00:06","slug":"a-night-of-astronomical-excitement","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/a-night-of-astronomical-excitement\/","title":{"rendered":"A night of astronomical excitement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>C257\/09<\/p>\n<p>Learn about the one of the world&#8217;s largest science projects that may call WA its home and explore the wonders of the night sky at Gingin Observatory this August.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin University of Technology&#8217;s Professor Steven Tingay will talk about WA&#8217;s role in the biggest science project of the early 21st century \u2014 the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) \u2014 on 15 August.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Tingay said the SKA would be an important project for the world&#8217;s scientific community and many young Western Australians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Australia becomes the SKA&#8217;s home, then it will be a major project for the entire State,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could mean thousands of jobs in constructing and running the most sophisticated radio astronomy equipment in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During his talk, Professor Tingay will explain how the SKA will work and what amazing discoveries it could make that will further our understanding of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Following the presentation, Gingin Observatory astronomers will offer a laser beam tour of the night sky and its many wonderful constellations. Visitors will also be given the opportunity to stargaze through the Observatory&#8217;s telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Tingay&#8217;s presentation starts at 7.00pm and costs $42.50 for adults, $38.00 for seniors, $19.00 for children, and $119.00 for families (2 adults, 2 children).
