Armed with a relevant and practical degree in extractive metallurgy, Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) graduate, Ryan Beatson, has secured employment in the mining industry despite the gloomy economic climate.<\/p>\n
Mr Beatson, originally from Bunbury, completed his Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy) in 2008 before securing a two-year graduate position at the Gold Fields Australia\u2019s St Ives Gold Mine.<\/p>\n
For the 22-year-old, it\u2019s the chance of a lifetime.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince I was young I have had an interest in science and mining,\u201d Mr Beatson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great job, and I was lucky enough to go to WASM where I was given the chance to obtain a solid university education, practical experience and a great range of skills.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no better place to study extractive metallurgy and other mining related courses than the WASM campus in Kalgoorlie.\u201d<\/p>\n
The School is regularly visited by industry representatives through forums such as careers fairs, allowing students to network with industry professionals and secure vacation work opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a great help in gaining valuable hands-on experience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce I am finished with my graduate program, I will consider my position and my options.<\/p>\n
