And whether you embrace AI, are sceptical of it, or, if you\u2019re like my mum, argue with it (\u201cDon\u2019t patronise me, Monica\u201d), there\u2019s no denying that AI is changing our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at how AI is transforming three big industries: agriculture, education and health, focusing on the important areas of climate forecasting, AI mentors and remote patient care respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI in agriculture: climate forecasting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1148\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_620328007-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Man stands in front of laptop showing data with fields of green plants in background.\" class=\"wp-image-27054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_620328007-scaled.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_620328007-768x430.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_620328007-1536x861.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever made an unsuccessful attempt to keep an indoor plant alive, spare a thought for the farmers who are responsible for growing the vast quantities of fruits, vegetables, grains and livestock that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Committees\/House\/Agriculture\/FoodsecurityinAustrali\/Report\/Chapter_3_-_Food_production_consumption_and_export\">feed 26 million Australians and 50 million people overseas annually<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve such remarkable outputs, farmers rely on tools like climate forecasting. By analysing past and present weather data, climate forecasting predicts future conditions, enabling farmers to make informed decisions about planting, harvesting, fertilising, irrigating and even selling stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The winds of change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, climate forecasting uses a general circulation model \u2013 a mathematical description of Earth\u2019s atmosphere, oceans, land and ice \u2013 and solves complicated equations to predict what will happen to climate systems hours, days and weeks in advance. These equations require a lot of computer power and are expensive to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GCM.png\" alt=\"Schematic structure of a general circulation model. \" class=\"wp-image-27046\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">General circulation models divide up the Earth into a 3D grid to make weather calculations. Credit: David Bice, Penn State University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When AI or machine learning is integrated into climate forecasting models, it identifies patterns in vast datasets, significantly enhancing the accuracy of predictions. It also achieves this more quickly and cost-effectively than traditional systems. A standout example is Google\u2019s GenCast, which employs a probabilistic approach to deliver forecasts that \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/news\/all\/articles\/2024\/december\/ai-weather-models-beat-traditional-forecasts\">according to Google<\/a> \u2013 surpass even the world\u2019s leading numerical weather prediction system, developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><a href=\"chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/www.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/assets-zone2\/ch\/en\/docs\/generic\/2024\/deloitte-ch-en-trendradar-future-of-sustainability.pdf\">Deloitte\u2019s 2023 Future of Sustainability report<\/a> predicts that AI climate forecasting is set to become a powerful tool in the agricultural industry because it can optimise things like crop cultivation and monitoring, disease protection and precision farming.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a basic example, say a farmer is considering when to sell her sheep. She may use climate forecasting software to determine how much rain is predicted to grow the pasture needed to feed the sheep. In the near future, they will continue be important role models for children, but will have AI in their toolkit to provide especially dynamic learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, AI mentors help some school children with assignments and learning acquisition through education apps and platforms. They are mostly constricted to text-based interactions, like a chatbot. But in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bernardmarr\/2024\/07\/09\/the-biggest-education-trends-of-the-next-10-years\/\">an article by Forbes<\/a>, it\u2019s predicted that AI mentors will soon be able to speak to students and offer tailored emotional support, and even use biometric data to advise students on the best time to learn and ways to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI mentors can also help teachers tailor curriculums to individual students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>For example, imagine a classroom where a virtual tutor is helping a child better understand algebra while the teacher assists a group of children on a history project.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> Or a classroom where a virtual assistant can instantly adjust lessons according to a child\u2019s strengths and weaknesses; giving them complex material for subjects they excel at and additional resources for subjects they find challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such curated learning has the potential to enhance a student\u2019s confidence and greatly improve learning outcomes. But it\u2019s not just students who can benefit from AI mentors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeducatoronline.com\/k12\/news\/new-ai-mentor-helps-upskill-australias-teachers\/285931\">A 2024 online article from the Educator Australia<\/a> illustrated how teachers, too, can use virtual assistants to enhance pedagogical strategies and generate learning activities more efficiently. This can lighten teachers\u2019 administrative work loads, give them more time to dedicate to other tasks and help them manage their work-life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence in education can also make learning more accessible and inclusive. In 2023 the Federal Government released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/schooling\/announcements\/australian-framework-generative-artificial-intelligence-ai-schools\">national framework<\/a> to help schools implement AI in a safe and ethical way. The framework was developed to help address concerns about the impact of AI on privacy and a child\u2019s growth and experience. Not to mention the importance of human mentoring and relationships (I\u2019m sure we can all remember at least one schoolteacher who seemed almost mystical in their wisdom and care).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, teachers need to be given the time and training to confidently use such technologies. Essentially, RPC is when doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals use communication technologies to diagnose and treat patients who are not in the same physical space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple technologies are usually used in RPC, including video conferences, electronic medical records, remote sensors like wearables and ingestible sensors, robotics for pharmaceutical deliveries, cloud computing and, of course, AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machine learning at the heart of healthcare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is already playing an essential role in remote patient monitoring and ensuring continuity of care. For example, the Australian-developed AI tool, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalhealth.com.au\/content\/technology\/news\/aust-ai-tool-warns-of-patient-deterioration-1531748604\">Ainsoff Deterioration Index<\/a>, is assisting patients with chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool uses machine learning to dynamically track a patient\u2019s vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature, to generate real-time data and alert clinicians if a patient is at risk of deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_631740268-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Virtual medical interface use for analysis and check patient health.\" class=\"wp-image-27052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_631740268-scaled.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_631740268-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AdobeStock_631740268-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Remote patient care is making healthcare more efficient and accessible.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A paper published in the international medical journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resuscitationjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Resuscitation<\/em><\/a> reported that the technology reduced adverse events by 16.7% (including death and emergency response) and reduced unplanned hospital admissions by more than 20% in a 10-month trial at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlab.edu.au\/health-x-digital-transformation\/\">2025 RMIT report<\/a> highlights that RPC is not a new form of health treatment. In fact, prior to the 1950s and the establishment of hospitals as hubs of healthcare, it was common for people to be treated in their homes. However, with technological innovations like AI, RPC is becoming more widely available and complementary to face-to-face health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RMIT report surmises that this hybrid approach to patient care can create \u201ca seamless and more efficient healthcare experience,\u201d one that is capable of \u201ccontinuous monitoring and support, improved patient outcomes, increased access to healthcare services, especially for those in remote and underserviced areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Going forward, a key consideration of integrating AI with RPC in Australia is equity; ensuring that communities outside of metropolitan areas have the resources and infrastructure to access and use such technology and treatment.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other considerations for the future of healthcare include AI bias, data and privacy protection, consent and, like AI in education, the vital importance of human relationships.
