Balancing the demands of student life can lead to higher levels of stress or anxiety. We know that sometimes being stressed can be helpful in pushing us to succeed, however we also know that sometimes it can be harmful to our performance and wellbeing, and can lead to behaviours such as procrastination.

Research has shown that procrastination is not about being lazy. Procrastinators have the desire to do something but just can’t seem to get started.

Procrastination is a coping mechanism – it’s our brain’s way of dealing with challenging emotions and negative moods induced by certain tasks. These emotions might include boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, or self-doubt.

What can you do to break this cycle? The good news is, if you learn to manage your stress and emotions in new ways, you can re-frame how you approach tasks you would rather put off.

How Curtin can help

The Curtin University Psychological and Counselling Service is offering a free Stress and Procrastination Group to help you manage stress and reduce procrastination. More specifically, you will develop the skills to calm your body, better handle difficult thoughts, change your behaviour and act with self-compassion.
