The aims of the Policy include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Supporting the dissemination and preservation of scholarly outputs by making them openly accessible in our institutional repository<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ensuring authors retain the copyrights to their work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Encouraging the creation of Open Educational Resources (OERs) to make teaching material openly accessible in our institutional repository<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n            \n                            <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block accordions\" role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n        \n\n    <div class=\"accordions__container\">\n                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"what-is-meant-by-open-and-openly-accessible\" aria-expanded=\"false\">What is meant by &#8220;open&#8221; and &#8220;openly accessible&#8221;? <span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"what-is-meant-by-open-and-openly-accessible\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>An open access work is defined by what you can do with it &#8211; e.g. download, reuse, copy, distribute or even adapt a work without requiring the author\u2019s permission. Permission to use an open work is pre-emptively granted by a license, usually a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/share-your-work\/cclicenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Commons license<\/a>. A work merely being freely available to read on the internet does not mean it is open, as you would need to ask for permission to do anything with the work beyond reading it.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"why-does-curtin-university-support-open-publishing\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Why does Curtin University support open publishing?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"why-does-curtin-university-support-open-publishing\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>A key principle of the open scholarship movement is that publicly funded research should be publicly accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional publishers typically require researchers to sign over their copyright, resulting in restricted access to paying users only (e.g. behind a login or \u201cpaywall\u201d). University libraries then become subscribers to provide access to research. Subscription costs tend to increase each year, often exceeding library budgets.<\/p>\n<p>This results in public funds being used to both generate the research and buy back the access to it. It\u2019s a lucrative business model for publishers, as the \u201cproduct\u201d has few production costs or overhead, and subscription fees are not regulated.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"how-can-i-make-my-work-openly-accessible\" aria-expanded=\"false\">How can I make my work openly accessible?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"how-can-i-make-my-work-openly-accessible\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Open access publishing is a way of making work freely available to readers in perpetuity, and has been proven to increase the diversity of citations a work receives\u00a0<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11192-023-04894-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1<\/a><\/sup>. A simple way to publish open access is by depositing a version of your published article (known as the Author Accepted Manuscript) into a university repository. Curtin University\u2019s repository Curate has archived thousands of outputs which are constantly accessed by people from around the world. This is also known as \u201cgreen\u201d open access.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers might also publish in \u201cgold\u201d open access journals, which don\u2019t charge readers for access. These may charge author fees instead, which are known as Author Processing Charges (APCs). Other open access journals don\u2019t charge a fee for authors or readers \u2013 these are known as \u201cdiamond\u201d open access journals. It also encourages Curtin staff to create and use Open Educational Resources (OERs) as part of their teaching. OERs are beneficial to students as they are free to access and download, reducing financial costs and technical barriers\u00a0<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11192-023-04894-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/open-access-papers-draw-more-citations-broader-readership#:~:text=Open%2Daccess%20papers%20draw%20more,Quick%20Search%20in%20Journals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"how-does-the-open-scholarship-policy-safeguard-researchers-copyrights\" aria-expanded=\"false\">How does the Open Scholarship Policy safeguard researchers&#8217; copyrights?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"how-does-the-open-scholarship-policy-safeguard-researchers-copyrights\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The Policy uses a \u201crights retention\u201d model that was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2008\/05\/open-access-html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pioneered by Harvard University in 2008<\/a>. Curtin researchers automatically grant the University a \u201cperpetual, royalty-free, nonexclusive, irrevocable and worldwide licence to exercise any and all rights relating to each of their scholarly articles, in any medium, and to authorise others to do the same\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This means that researchers pre-emptively provide Curtin with a license to use their work. This license is used by Curtin as a safeguarding mechanism so Curtin can grant back the license to the author.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"in-what-situation-would-a-researchers-copyrights-need-to-be-safeguarded\" aria-expanded=\"false\">In what situation would a researchers&#8217; copyrights need to be &#8220;safeguarded&#8221;?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"in-what-situation-would-a-researchers-copyrights-need-to-be-safeguarded\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>As an example, an author might sign over their copyright to a publisher to publish an article in a journal. However, the author may want to do other things with their article content later, such as deposit a copy in a university repository, use an excerpt from it in a book chapter, or re-use one of the diagrams in a conference presentation. To do any of these things would require permission from the publisher, who now owns the copyright.<\/p>\n<p>However, since Curtin has a \u201cperpetual, royalty-free, nonexclusive, irrevocable and worldwide licence to exercise any and all rights relating to each of their scholarly articles, in any medium, and to authorise others to do the same\u201d, Curtin has granted these rights back to the author, negating the need to ask permission.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"does-this-mean-that-curtin-owns-my-copyright\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Does this mean that Curtin owns my copyright?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"does-this-mean-that-curtin-owns-my-copyright\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Curtin does not own copyright in scholarly works (see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/governance\/compliance-legal\/find-a-policy\/#I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intellectual Property Policy<\/a>\u00a0for more detail). Only you as the author can sign this copyright away. What the Open Scholarship Policy does is grant Curtin a broad license to use your work and grant the license back to you. Curtin is thus a licensee, not a copyright holder. This license is \u201cnonexclusive\u201d, meaning Curtin does not have to be the only licensee that the author could make an agreement with. Per the Open Scholarship Policy, staff and students are encouraged to publish OERs. However, it is important to ensure that the OER created is also compliant with Curtin\u2019s Disability Inclusion Policy.
