Congratulations to Bachelor of Creative Arts (Fine Art) graduate Khashayar Salmanzadeh, whose portrait \u2018A new garden\u2019 has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Lester Prize.

\u2018A new garden\u2019 portrays Shireen, a Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed woman of Iranian heritage, in her Melbourne suburban home.
\u00a0
Having fled Iran to escape intense religious persecution given her family\u2019s Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed identity, Shireen\u2019s diasporic experiences run parallel with many young Australians today who possess a hybridised cultural identity.
\u00a0
Through the interweaving of abstracted Persian calligraphy within Shireen and her surroundings, the work explores the interplay between her home environment and inner world.
\u00a0
\u201cFor me, Shireen is a mirror of our contemporary spiritual reality whose character and life of diaspora sheds light on what it means to be human in a globalised world.\u201d – Khashayar Salmanzadeh.

Congratulations to Curtin Humanities Honours student Yasamin Khadembashi, who has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Lester Prize.

Yasamin\u2019s reimagined self-portrait \u2018Immoral Warrior\u2019 is inspired by the Persian Pahlavan, the holy warrior and champion of Iranian folklore.
\u00a0
Rather than recreating a historical figure, the work imagines a new protagonist shaped by lived experience, cultural inheritance and imagination.
\u00a0
Adorned with sculptural piped oil paint, metal leaf, rhinestones and synthetic eyelash extensions, the portrait occupies a space between myth, portraiture and personal narrative while reimagining the traditionally masculine Pahlavan through a contemporary queer, feminist lens.

Lily\u2019s grandmother was a printmaker, artist and Curtin University Fine Arts alumna, and is a significant voice in Stolen Generations truth-telling.

Presented together at John Curtin Gallery,\u00a0OA_RR (2016\u201317) and\u00a0Initiation OA_RR (2021) combine movement, sound and visual performance to explore ancestry, memory and the ongoing strength of Aboriginal identity.

In\u00a0OA_RR, Rennie drives a hand-painted 1973 Rolls-Royce Corniche across Country, its camouflage design drawing from Kamilaroi diamond patterns. The work reflects on the legacy of colonisation, honouring his grandmother while asserting the continuing presence and resilience of Aboriginal culture.

In\u00a0Initiation OA_RR, a metallic pink Holden Monaro moves through the working-class landscapes of Melbourne\u2019s west, drawing connections between drag-racing culture, personal history and contemporary interpretations of First Peoples\u2019 initiation practices.

Together, these works blur the boundaries between street performance and ceremony, transforming cars into symbols of memory, belonging and cultural authority.
