{"id":2210,"date":"2025-06-27T15:33:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T07:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/?post_type=events&#038;p=2210"},"modified":"2025-06-30T12:20:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T04:20:17","slug":"naidoc-week-talk-kim-scott","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/events\/naidoc-week-talk-kim-scott\/","title":{"rendered":"NAIDOC Week Lunchtime Talk with Kim Scott"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Join us in NAIDOC Week 2025 to hear Professor Kim Scott, Author and John Curtin Distinguished Professor, School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Curtin University, reading from a selection of his novels, and discussing the relationship between these extracts and the exhibition, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/exhibitions\/mamang-miyel-ang-djinang\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/jcg\/exhibitions\/mamang-miyel-ang-djinang\/\">Mamang-miyel-ang Djinang \/\u00a0<em>Seeing with the whale\u2019s eye<\/em><\/a>&#8216;. Mamang-miyel-ang Djinang features illustrations from picture books as a result of Kim\u2019s collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wirlomin.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wirlomin Noongar and Stories Inc<\/a> over some twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kim Scott&nbsp;<\/strong>is an award-winning Noongar author who has worked extensively in Indigenous education and the arts.&nbsp;Kim\u2019s second novel,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fremantlepress.com.au\/products\/benang-from-the-heart\"><strong><em>Benang<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(1999), won a number of literary awards, including The Miles Franklin, which he won for a second time with&nbsp;<em>That Deadman Dance<\/em>&nbsp;(2010) along with the South-east Asia and Pacific Commonwealth Writers\u2019 Prize, the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal and other accolades. His work has been translated and published in China, India, Holland, Japan and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kim was awarded a Centenary Medal, and in 2012 was awarded Western Australian of the Year.&nbsp;He is a member of the West Australian Writers Hall of Fame and in 2022 was declared a State Cultural Treasure.
