{"id":3432,"date":"2022-08-30T14:04:39","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T07:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/?page_id=3432"},"modified":"2025-07-02T15:21:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T07:21:13","slug":"pathogenic-microorganisms","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/hazardous-materials\/biological\/pathogenic-microorganisms\/","title":{"rendered":"Pathogenic microorganisms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At Curtin we study pathogenic microorganisms, seeking cures for the diseases of people, animals and plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For information about how to handle the samples, refer to Sections 3-5 of the Australian\/New Zealand Standard 2243.3:2022 Safety in laboratories Part 3: Microbiological safety and containment. Curtin staff and students have access to the Standard through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/databases.library.curtin.edu.au\/?letter=I\">Curtin Library\u2019s Intertek Inform account<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can handle your microorganism at the same Physical Containment level as their Risk Group then you don\u2019t need approval from your Biosafety Partner. This includes handling the microorganism entirely within a Class II Biosafety Cabinet if it can be infective via the respiratory route. However, if you need to use non-standard methods,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/bernadette-bradley-c93a228e\/\">contact your Biosafety Partner<\/a>. They will help you to assess the risks of your methods before you can begin work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immunisations and Health Monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend you get the appropriate immunisations listed in <a href=\"https:\/\/immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au\/\">The Australian Immunisation Handbook 2018.<\/a> There may be other vaccinations available that are relevant to the samples you are handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that people who work in labs containing human pathogens get an initial medical examination followed by periodic health monitoring for exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health Monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting work with microorganisms pathogenic to humans, all lab users must have pre-exposure infection status screening performed. Contact a medical doctor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/health\/medical-centre\/\">Curtin University Health Service<\/a> to discuss pre-exposure infection status screening. It\u2019s illegal to have any SSBA unless it\u2019s being held following all the requirements of the SSBA regulatory system. Curtin is not registered to work with SSBAs, so it\u2019s illegal for any of our people to store or work with SSBAs.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to work with any SSBA in the future, then you must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.curtin.edu.au\/s\/search.html?query=Bernadette+Bradley&amp;collection=curtin-university&amp;clive=curtin-staff-profiles&amp;form=staff&amp;type=Search&amp;facetScope=\">contact your Biosafety Partner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>immediately to discuss the possibility once the proper registration has been gained from the Federal Government Department of Health and Aging.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to culture an SSBA from an environmental sample or a biological sample without specifically meaning to do so. If you become aware that you have cultured a presumptive SSBA, you must immediately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.curtin.edu.au\/s\/search.html?query=Bernadette+Bradley&amp;collection=curtin-university&amp;clive=curtin-staff-profiles&amp;form=staff&amp;type=Search&amp;facetScope=\">contact your Biosafety Partner<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"legislation-governing-the-use-of-ssbas-in-australia\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Legislation governing the use of SSBAs in Australia<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"legislation-governing-the-use-of-ssbas-in-australia\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Part 3 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/SSBA\">National Health Security Act 2007 and Regulations 2018<\/a> describes a national scheme for the regulation of SSBAs in Australia and builds on Australia\u2019s obligations under the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (1975) and UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004).<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health\u00a0is the administrative body under the Act.
